KUWAIT: Kuwait’s Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) has issued a warning against prolonged and direct sun exposure during the summer months, highlighting its significant role in increasing the risk of skin cancer. The advisory came as part of the launch of CAN’s latest awareness initiative, “Safe Under the Sun,” aimed at promoting sun safety and encouraging early detection practices. Speaking at the campaign’s launch, CAN Chairman and oncologist Dr Khaled Al-Saleh stressed that skin cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide. “Despite its prevalence, many cases can be prevented or detected early, greatly improving treatment outcomes and survival rates,” he said.

Citing official statistics, Dr Al-Saleh noted that in 2020, Kuwait recorded 24 cases of skin cancer—representing 7.3 percent of all diagnosed cancers that year—with eight cases among Kuwaitis and 16 among non-Kuwaitis. He outlined key early warning signs such as the appearance of new moles or spots, noticeable changes in existing moles, non-healing sores, or the presence of scaly patches. “Public awareness of these symptoms is critical, and we urge regular self-examinations as well as clinical screenings,” he added.

Dr Al-Saleh emphasized the importance of preventative measures, including the use of sunscreen, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, wearing protective clothing, and maintaining routine skin checks. Treatment options, he explained, vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer and may include surgical removal, cryotherapy, laser treatments, immunotherapy, and other advanced medications. As part of the campaign, CAN will distribute educational materials and host awareness events in shopping malls and other public venues. — KUNA

Another milestone reinforcing company’s role as a key enabler of Kuwait’s digital future

KUWAIT: Zain Kuwait has successfully concluded the third edition of its Innovation Nation Summer Camp, held in collaboration with Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Giftedness and Creativity — a Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) center — and Assima Mall. The program successfully empowered nearly 2,600 boys and girls to explore the worlds of technology and digital innovation, creating unforgettable memories that pave the way for their future ambitions. Over the course of ten days, the camp provided an inspiring, interactive space for children aged 7 to 14 to engage in exciting educational experiences across innovative fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, electronics, and renewable energy.

The success of this year’s camp marks another milestone in Zain’s ongoing journey to empower future generations, reinforcing its role as a key enabler of Kuwait’s digital transformation through educational and community initiatives that open doors to innovation and knowledge. The workshops were led by a team of certified trainers from the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center, in addition to engineering students from GUST (the Innovation Nation Leaders) and part-time members of Zain’s FUN program. The team developed interactive educational content using non-traditional methods that encouraged children to experiment, discover, and learn through hands-on practice.

Activities included fun learning experiences that focused on practical, interactive components, such as building pet-shaped robots and delivery bots, learning the basics of AI, exploring 3D printing and electronics, and understanding concepts in renewable energy and smart innovation. These experiences enriched the children’s passion for technology and science. This camp was part of the wider Innovation Nation initiative, which embodies Zain’s strategy to support and empower the next generation by offering inspiring educational opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. It reaffirms Zain’s commitment to playing a vital role in shaping a promising digital future for Kuwait.

KUWAIT: A group of young participants displayed remarkable creativity during the “Little Potter’s Creations” workshop, held as part of the 17th Summer Cultural Festival organized by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). The hands-on workshop, hosted at the Museum of Modern Art, introduced children to the fundamentals of ceramic art while nurturing their imagination and technical skills.

Workshop presenter and ceramics trainer Dalal Al-Saeed explained that the initiative is designed to familiarize children with the art of pottery and encourage them to explore their artistic potential. “Working with clay is not just an artistic exercise — it strengthens hand muscles, improves fine motor skills, and instills patience and focus,” Al-Saeed told KUNA. She noted that the activity allows children to express themselves creatively while also developing important cognitive and physical abilities.

Highlighting the council’s commitment to cultural enrichment, NCCAL Chairperson Sarah Khalaf said the workshop is part of a broader series of art-focused activities included in the summer festival program. The ‘Little Potter’s Creations’ workshop targets children between the ages of 7 and 14 and has witnessed strong participation,” she said. “We are keen to organize meaningful programs that appeal to various age groups and cultivate public taste, particularly among children and youth, by supporting their artistic and cultural development.”

The event also received praise from parents. Reem Abdul Latif, mother of participant Fatima Al-Mutairi, shared her appreciation for the initiative. “My daughter is passionate about pottery and was very eager to sign up after seeing the announcement on NCCAL’s social media accounts,” she said. “The workshop is highly beneficial, very well organized, and the care shown to the children encourages us as parents to remain engaged.”

Now in its 17th edition, the Summer Cultural Festival launched last Wednesday and runs for seven weeks, offering a wide array of cultural and artistic events for all members of the family. Through this initiative, the NCCAL aims to foster creativity, enhance cultural awareness, and provide a rich educational and entertaining experience for children throughout the summer break. — KUNA
