Kuwait continues to stand firm on Palestinian rights

Published

KUWAIT: Kuwait continues to maintain steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the right of the Palestinian people to their land and freedom, experts said Friday. Speaking at the 45th Gulf Summit hosted in Kuwait last December, His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, condemned the Zionist entity’s occupation and successive massacres of the Palestinian people, reflecting Kuwait’s enduring commitment to Palestine for more than eight decades.

In several high-level statements, His Highness the Amir called on the international community, and the UN Security Council in particular, to exercise their responsibilities by ensuring the implementation of all relevant Security Council resolutions, immediately halting hostilities, providing international protection for innocent civilians and guaranteeing safe corridors for the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

He reaffirmed Kuwait’s “historical, principled position supporting the brotherly Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle to end the (Zionist entity’s) occupation and obtain all political rights, including the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant international references and resolutions.”

Kuwait’s active diplomatic role in defending Palestinian rights has been especially visible in the past three years. In 2023, Kuwaiti diplomacy at the United Nations and Security Council highlighted the need to halt repeated Zionist entity attacks and protect civilians, earning wide support from Arab, Muslim and international partners.

In 2024, Kuwait strengthened its efforts through official statements and diplomatic interventions, emphasizing that “the absence of a just and comprehensive solution will remain a source of tension and instability in the region and the world.”

By 2025, Kuwait intensified its international leadership, actively participating in UN General Assembly discussions and asserting that “establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only solution capable of achieving security, peace, and stability,” while reaffirming adherence to relevant UN resolutions.

Since the October 2023 assault on Gaza by the Zionist entity, Kuwait has expanded its political and humanitarian support, launching urgent aid convoys and mobilizing public initiatives to stop the attacks, provide protection and ensure the Palestinian cause remains central to the Arab and Islamic world.

At the Cairo Peace Summit, the Amir condemned calls for the forced displacement of Palestinians and called on the international community to act to stop military operations and protect civilians in Gaza. “Any discussion of peace in the Middle East will not succeed without establishing an independent Palestinian state and ensuring the Palestinian people obtain their full rights,” he said.

Highlighting Kuwait’s humanitarian efforts, Dr Noura Al-Shuaibi, assistant professor of political science at Kuwait University, told KUNA: “Since October 7, 2023, Kuwait has played a prominent role supporting Palestine both humanitarily and diplomatically. More than 50 aircraft and three relief ships carrying food and medical supplies were deployed, along with medical teams performing life-saving surgeries inside Gaza.”

Al-Shuaibi added: “On the diplomatic front, Kuwait has taken firm stances at international forums, condemning human rights violations and pushing for ceasefire resolutions and civilian protection, whether through the UN, the International Parliamentary Union, or the Gulf Cooperation Council.” She also noted Kuwait’s continued financial contributions to UNRWA and wide-reaching humanitarian campaigns through local charities, amounting to tens of millions of dollars.

Dr Ayed Al-Jarid, professor of modern and contemporary history, said Kuwait has been “a key voice in conveying the Palestinian perspective to the world and strengthening Arab unity at international institutions.” He emphasized that Kuwait’s support, both official and popular, has remained consistent since 1948, including donations, relief shipments, and vocal advocacy.

Dr Khaled Al-Shatti, President of the Kuwait Center for Documentation of Humanitarian Action (Fanar), highlighted Kuwait’s proactive role, noting annual voluntary contributions of $500,000 to the International Labour Organization and multiple airlifts delivering hundreds of tons of aid. He cited the August campaign “Faza’a for Gaza,” supervised by the Ministry of Social Affairs in cooperation with other ministries and charitable organizations, which raised over 11.5 million Kuwaiti dinars (approximately $37.6 million). Experts say Kuwait’s integrated political and humanitarian approach has reinforced its global reputation as a principled and ethical voice advocating for justice and the Palestinian right to self-determination. — KUNA

Kuwait to standardize recognition of foreign high school diplomas

KUWAIT: Kuwait’s ministers of education and higher education are working on a unified system to recognize foreign high school diplomas, a move that comes amid long-running concerns over fairness in the government’s scholarship program.

Every year, thousands of Kuwaiti high school graduates compete for all-expenses-paid government scholarships to study abroad. While students from public, private, and foreign schools can apply, critics have repeatedly accused the program of favouring graduates of foreign-language private schools — a claim officials have repeatedly denied.

On Wednesday, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr Nader Al-Jallal and Minister of Education Jalal Al-Tabtabai held a joint meeting to discuss a standardized process. Senior officials from both ministries and representatives from higher education institutions also attended.

In a joint statement, the ministers said they focused on “organizational and technical aspects of the recognition process in a way that limits grade inflation and ensures fairness and equal opportunity for graduates of the Ministry of Education who wish to join various higher education institutions inside and outside the country.”

They also emphasized “the importance of continuing coordination and working in a team spirit between the two sides to reach an integrated and fair system that reinforces confidence in the mechanisms for recognizing foreign secondary school certificates” and committed to implementing the agreed-upon measures “to ensure swift completion and achieve the desired goals.”

The ministries said the effort will help unify procedures to meet the requirements of the coming phase and serve the public interest of students and their families. — Agencies

CAN kicks off annual breast cancer awareness campaign

Published

By

KUWAIT: The National Cancer Awareness Campaign (CAN) has launched its annual breast cancer awareness initiative, “Pink Lifebuoy,” under the patronage of Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Children Dr Amthal Al-Huwaila, in cooperation with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. The campaign will run throughout October to spread health awareness and encourage early screening for breast cancer.

Speaking at the launch ceremony on Wednesday, CAN Chairman Dr Khaled Al-Saleh stressed that “awareness and knowledge are the first step toward prevention and recovery,” noting that breast cancer ranks first among cancers affecting women in Kuwait, and is also the most common cancer among women worldwide.

Dr Al-Saleh highlighted a recent global study showing cancer recovery rates in Kuwait have risen to 44 percent this year, crediting the progress to increased awareness and early detection efforts. Citing data from the Kuwait Cancer Control Center, he said 582 breast cancer cases were recorded among women in Kuwait, including 326 Kuwaiti and 256 non-Kuwaiti patients. Encouragingly, survival rates remain high, with figures showing that 94.5 percent of patients diagnosed in 2020 are still alive, and that most cases are detected at stage II.

“Knowledge and awareness are a lifeline for women,” Dr Al-Saleh said, emphasizing the importance of health education and monthly breast self-examinations. He urged women to recognize early warning signs and practice self-exams regularly as a simple but effective tool for early detection.

Board member and initiative head Dr Hessa Majid Al-Shaheen underlined the campaign’s social impact, saying it has encouraged more women to undergo mammograms and self-examination training. She noted that more than 172,000 female students have already been trained in breast self-examination techniques.

For the past 14 years, CAN has organized a series of events during “Pink October,” including self-examination workshops in companies, universities, and the Public Authority for Applied Education, as well as awareness exhibitions in shopping malls, health centers, and hospitals. Awareness lectures are also delivered in schools, targeting both students and teachers to reinforce the importance of early detection.

Dr Al-Shaheen stressed that continued cooperation between health, social, educational, and media institutions is key to strengthening awareness efforts, supporting early screening, providing psychological care to patients, and motivating the community to adopt healthy lifestyles that help prevent cancer. — KUNA
