PM chairs ministerial meeting on Kuwait-China MoU, projects

KUWAIT: His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah chaired the 19th meeting of the ministerial committee responsible for overseeing the implementation of agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between the governments of Kuwait and China. The meeting was held on Monday at Bayan Palace.

The session reviewed the latest progress on several strategic development projects outlined in the bilateral MoUs, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, electric power systems, renewable energy initiatives, low-carbon waste recycling systems, housing development, wastewater treatment infrastructure, the establishment of free and economic zones, environmental agriculture, and efforts to combat desertification.

His Highness the Prime Minister underscored the importance of intensifying efforts to set strategic priorities and implement programs that support national economic growth. He called for accelerating the pace of work to realize the objectives of Kuwait’s comprehensive development plan, in accordance with the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Ambassador Samih Jawhar Hayat, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs and rapporteur of the ministerial committee, delivered a detailed presentation on the executive steps taken to monitor the implementation of the Kuwait-China agreements. He also shared preliminary outcomes from the recent visit of a high-level Chinese delegation focused on environmental cooperation. Discussions addressed key areas such as ecosystem rehabilitation, afforestation programs, environmental protection, and strategies to combat sand encroachment, in line with the Amir’s vision.

Later on the same day, His Highness the Prime Minister received at Bayan Palace the Chairman of the Board of Directors of a leading Chinese state-owned company responsible for implementing environmental projects in Kuwait, Fang Jinshu, accompanied by a high-level technical delegation. During the meeting, the delegation presented a visual report and detailed briefing following site visits to areas in need of land reclamation. They proposed a range of solutions and modern technologies to address environmental challenges, drawing on the company’s 85-year legacy in desertification control and large-scale afforestation efforts.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs Abdullatif Hamed Al-Mishari, Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Investment Noura Sulaiman Al-Fassam, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Dr Sabeeh Abdulaziz Abdulmohsen Al-Mukhaizeem, Acting Head of the Prime Minister’s Diwan Sheikh Khaled Mohammed Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, Head of the Fatwa and Legislation Department Counselor Salah Ateeq Al-Majed and Ambassador Samih Jawhar Hayat. — KUNA
