KUWAIT: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) signed a memorandum of cooperation this week with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration, discuss recent developments in the civil aviation sector, and review proposals and projects that support its development in line with the highest international standards. The memorandum was signed by Sheikh Humoud Al-Mubarak Al-Humoud Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, President of DGCA, and Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the ICAO Council, in the presence of several officials from both sides.
In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Sheikh Humoud Al-Sabah said the agreement reflects Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening ties with international civil aviation organizations and to supporting and developing the skills of national personnel. He added that the agreement will support key projects such as the new passenger terminal (T2), the cargo city, as well as enhancing safety, security, and performance efficiency across various civil aviation domains.
He emphasized that signing the agreement is a strategic step toward developing the national civil aviation sector and boosting the efficiency of its operational and technical systems. He noted the importance of leveraging ICAO’s expertise in training, knowledge exchange, and international engagement to strengthen Kuwait’s global standing in aviation.
Sheikh Humoud Al-Sabah pointed out that this is the ICAO President’s first visit to Kuwait, underscoring the country’s significance and the depth of its relationship with ICAO — an organization established in 1944, with Kuwait joining in 1960. He said the visit benefits all sectors of civil aviation, passengers, and airlines by ensuring necessary facilitation in the air transport market. He expected the visit to have a positive impact on achieving shared goals. ICAO President Sciacchitano expressed his pleasure at signing the agreement with Kuwait. He affirmed that this partnership will open broad avenues for cooperation and for enhancing national workforce capabilities through specialized training programs.
Sciacchitano confirmed the agreement supports strategic projects that are fundamental to the growth of Kuwait’s civil aviation sector in line with international standards. During his visit, Sciacchitano toured key facilities at Kuwait International Airport, including the new T2 terminal, the main DGCA building, the air navigation center, the new control tower, and the new runway. He praised the remarkable progress and strong focus on civil aviation development, wishing Kuwait continued success. Last Saturday, the DGCA announced that Kuwait International Airport successfully passed an ICAO security audit with results exceeding international standards. This was part of ICAO’s regular, official audit process conducted for member states. — KUNA
