Kuwait University cuts energy use by 15%, targets 20%

KUWAIT: Kuwait University has successfully reduced its energy consumption by approximately 15% through the ongoing implementation of energy-saving measures. The university is now working to boost those savings to 20 percent by activating energy-efficient systems in its air conditioning plants and placing select buildings in standby mode during the summer semester, when academic activity is lower.

These efforts are being carried out without compromising the university’s educational, research, or security functions. The initiative comes as Kuwait faces increasing pressure on its power grid. Over the past month, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has implemented temporary power cuts in 30 areas, citing high demand and scheduled maintenance ahead of the summer season. In response, various government entities have begun rolling out measures to reduce electricity usage.

During a visit to Sabah Al-Salem University City on Thursday, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Nader Al-Jallal stressed the importance of energy conservation in academic institutions. He commended Kuwait University’s 2024 campaign, “Let’s Be Partners in Saving Electricity,” calling it a model for the country’s broader environmental sustainability goals.

Accompanied by University President Dr Dina Al-Mailem, the minister toured Central Plant No. 3 and the university’s main control room to review preparations and progress. Dr Al-Mailem reaffirmed the university’s commitment to responsible energy use, announcing the formation of a dedicated committee to establish energy management standards and enhance conservation efforts. She noted that these steps align with Kuwait’s national policies and sustainable development goals, while also supporting the university’s standing in global academic rankings. — KUNA
