KUWAIT: The second regional workshop on “The Rights and Needs of Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities in the Care Economy in the Arab Region” will be held in Beirut from October 7 to 9. The event is organized by the Arab Women’s Organization in partnership with UN Women and the National Commission for Lebanese Women. Representing Kuwait, Rihab Bouresli, member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and second vice-president of the Arab Organization for Persons with Disabilities, participated as a speaker, delivering a lecture titled “Regional Frameworks and Challenges in Arab Countries.”

Bouresli said the workshop aims to develop a regional roadmap for a care economy that addresses the rights and needs of older adults and persons with disabilities, recognizing their contributions to economic well-being, social inclusion and job creation. The event will feature experts and researchers from regional and international organizations, and will examine demographic trends, data gaps, rights-based frameworks, policy gaps, and the economic value of care in driving employment and GDP growth.

She added that the program includes presentations on best practices from governments, international organizations, and civil society, alongside discussions on financing mechanisms, sustainable partnerships, and the role of technology and innovation in delivering comprehensive and high-quality care. Practical recommendations from the workshop will feed into the regional care economy roadmap, covering all stages of life, including care for children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, while promoting job creation, gender equality and inclusive growth.

Bouresli highlighted Kuwait’s achievements in this field, citing legislation and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly and persons with disabilities. These include enhanced health, social, cultural, and sports services, support for psychological and social well-being, and workforce integration, in line with the “New Kuwait” vision, which recognizes these groups as essential partners in national development.
