KUWAIT: On his first official visit to Kuwait, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, Harris Theoharis, praised Kuwait’s regional and global role in peacebuilding and mediation, highlighting the strong values both nations share in promoting dialogue, stability, and friendship among nations. His remarks came during a reception hosted by the Greek Ambassador at his residence on Monday. “Kuwait is a very important country in resolving crises and peace-making. It has good relations with almost every country in the world,” Theoharis said.
“In that respect, it follows similar principles as Greece. We both believe in friendship, dialogue, and bridge-building — values that are needed now more than ever.” Theoharis emphasized that both countries, though small in size, play significant roles in international diplomacy and security by adhering to the principles of multilateralism and the rule of law. “We are two small countries that believe the strength of power should never supersede the rule of law,” he added.
Expanding cooperation
The deputy minister described the current Greece–Kuwait relationship as the strongest it has ever been, expressing optimism about future cooperation in trade, investment, and joint development projects. “We believe in the force of cooperation and see many opportunities for enhancing bilateral relations in the economic field. Greek products, Kuwaiti imports, and investment flowing both ways can be mutually beneficial,” he said.
While no agreements were signed during the visit, Theoharis revealed that both sides discussed restarting the bilateral dialogue through coordination between relevant agencies, such as Greece’s sovereign fund and Kuwait’s Investment Authority. Further meetings are expected in the coming weeks to shape future modes of cooperation. He also noted the importance of Kuwait hosting the GCC–EU Council meeting, calling it “a vital platform for dialogue between two regions that are strategically significant both politically and economically.”
‘Greece is Back’
Addressing Kuwaiti investors, Theoharis confidently stated: “Greece is back. Greece is a very safe place for investment.” He cited his country’s strong economic recovery, political stability, and investor confidence as signs of Greece’s renewed strength. “We have reduced unemployment and national debt, achieved more than twice the average growth rate of Europe, and maintained political stability — giving investors the ability to plan ahead without surprises,” he said. “This creates the best environment for long-term, mutually beneficial investments.”
Theoharis also praised the existing educational ties between the two nations. “We have many Greek professors and teachers working and conducting research in Kuwait, and I’m very glad to see this exchange flourish,” he said. On healthcare cooperation, he expressed determination to expand partnerships between Greek and Middle Eastern health institutions, noting a recent collaboration between a Greek health group and UAE-based Pure Health. “This shows that health is a promising field where Greece and the region can do much more together,” he added.
